This is an essay in which you take a stance (pro or con or somewhere in between) on an issue. The topic on which you choose to focus must fall within the general theme of Social Justice. According to the National Association of Social Workers, “Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities.” Some ideas that fall within the theme of Social Justice (and keep in mind this can be either global or national) are food and hunger issues, immigration, health care, human rights, environment, poverty, labor, justice systems, etc.

Your topic within the theme is your choice, but you may NOT write about the following issues: abortion, animal rights, capital punishment, euthanasia, gun control, legalizing marijuana, lowering the drinking age, paying college athletes, same sex marriages, or steroid use. These topics have been overdone. Please choose a topic about which you are passionate because your caring about a topic will make it an easier essay for you to write and a more interesting essay for readers to read. Perhaps consider composing an essay on a topic within your major focus/career goal or a topic that affects you directly or indirectly. You must clear your topic with me before pursuing it.

You will begin with a research question—a question will guide your research to a logical, compelling argument rather than immediately putting you on one side or the other of an issue. Keep an open mind! For example, your research question might be “Should the United States pass a law requiring GMO foods to be labeled?” In this question, you are not immediately taking a stance. Instead, you’ll research both sides of the issue and find where you stand after conducting quality research.

Because this is a Researched Position Paper, you must conduct research to support your argument. You will use the research as evidence (quotes or paraphrases) in your essay. This research must consist of at least six sources (more is OK, less is not):

two scholarly articles (find these through Google Scholar or through the library’s website)
